Value of Volunteers at Iron County Summer Youth Camp

camp staff-volunteersVolunteers are essential to the success of 4-H programs, and Iron County Summer Youth Camp (ICSYC) is no exception! Over the years, we have had volunteers come and go – some spending the entire week at camp, others spending a few hours of their days or evenings. Many, such as Sunny Ofstad and Kandie Harma, are parents of campers, some of whom continue to volunteer even after their children are no longer attending¬†camp. Many of our volunteers have returned to camp for several years. In July, Iron County Summer Youth Camp celebrated its 16th year, and one of our volunteers has been coming to camp and volunteering (for the entire camp week – overnights included) since the very beginning. Thank you to Duane “Red Rod” Gulan for your years of dedication!

Red Rod has driven the school bus of campers and counselors to and from camp, volunteered at the waterfront to provide extra assistance to the lifeguard and counselors, helped with meal service, has started and kept the evening campfires going, and been an all-around “helper”, doing what is needed. “It’s all about the kids.” Yes, it is all about the kids. He has seen the youngest campers (3rd grade) grow up to become counselors. Some of our former counselors, such as Felicia Herlevi and Lauren Vinopal, return as Summer Assistants. Others return someday as adult volunteers.

We greatly appreciate the time and service all of our volunteers provide! Thank you to all!
